Core Concepts
Substack Cross-Posting
Already publishing on Substack? Easily connect your Substack to automatically cross-post to Aemula, expand your reach, and increase your earnings!
It takes two minutes to set up, then you just continue publishing to Substack as you normally would. We will handle the rest!
There is no cost, no obligation, and you retain ownership of all of your content. In fact, you get more control over your work than you would on Substack alone.
Why cross-post?
Instant Monetization
All interactions with your posts on Aemula are automatically monetized from community's subscription pool. You can focus on your work while we focus on growing the community and converting paid subscribers for you.
Success on Substack and other platforms follows a power-law distribution, meaning that those with the largest existing audiences typically earn the majority of income flowing through the system. On Aemula, each article earns based on its own merit. We want to reward high-quality work, not popularity or growth hacking. Learn more about our programmatic Author Payout protocol here.
Expand your audience
Aemula's Open-Source Algorithms are built to expose readers to new perspectives, allowing readers outside of your typical audience to discover your work. We aim to maximize the impact of your message, not just optimize for clicks and views.
Since you retain ownership of your content, you are more than welcome to self-promote your Substack in the Header Blurb or Footer Blurb of your Aemula posts to direct readers to subscribe to you directly, generating a stream of new readers discovering your work.
Verifiably own your content
When you publish to Substack, you might own your audience, but you don't directly own your posts. They exist on Substack's servers, and their existence relies on Substack to continue hosting them.
When you set up cross-posting with Aemula, we automatically upload your content to the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), a peer-to-peer network that hosts and serves your content, and we record your ownership of your work on the Base blockchain, an immutable ledger built on Ethereum to prove your ownership.
Aemula operates a gateway to allow subscribers to access content published through our protocol, but you do not have to rely on us! Easily set up your own gateway to our protocol to store and serve your own posts, removing your reliance on third-parties to preserve your work. Reach out to support@aemula.com to inquire about setting up your own gateway and take custody of your content.

Enter your Substack publication's URL
- Note your Substack publication will need to be set up as a "custom website", not a personal profile. You can read more about the difference here, but you can generally tell by looking at your publication's URL:
- We support URLs that look like "aemula.substack.com"
- We do not support URLs that look like "substack.com/@aemula"
- Note your Substack publication will need to be set up as a "custom website", not a personal profile. You can read more about the difference here, but you can generally tell by looking at your publication's URL:
Verify your Substack by copying the verification code and setting it as a Custom Tag in your Substack settings
- Clicking the "Verify" button will automatically open your Substack settings and scroll to the Custom Tag section if you are signed in to your Substack account in the same browser

- Return to your Aemula tab and wait a few seconds for verification to complete!
Once verified, your account will begin cross-posting within a few hours. Our Substack integration seeds your publication by cross-posting your 20 most recent posts, and automatically sets your Aemula profile picture, bio, and about page based on your Substack settings.
You will be prompted to set a Publication alias on Aemula and choose your notification settings. You can also go to your Publication Dashboard page to set a default Header and Footer blurb to be attached to all cross-posts on Aemula in case you want to include a link to your Substack promotion or any additional context.
For email notification settings, we will not store your email unless the "Receive email notifications" box is checked. At any time, if you uncheck that box from your Publication Settings, your email will automatically be deleted from our database. We will not send you marketing. Email notifications are only to confirm cross-posts and confirm monthly payouts to your Aemula account.
If you want to stay informed of Aemula updates and collaborate with other publications on the platform, you will be able to join the Aemula Signal group from the Write page on Aemula once you have a verified publication on the platform.
