The Open Beta version of Aemula is the initial release of the live platform on Base Mainnet. Monetization is enabled through paid onchain subscriptions, but platform access is still gated to users with active accounts. The goal of the Open Beta is to continue testing the platform, receive live feedback, and monitor platform costs while we build additional features and functionality. The Open Beta includes features such as open publishing and platform-native, onchain payments in USDC.

Upgrades

• Aemula Protocol upgrade to support multimedia publishing
  • Publishing now supports thumbnail images, as well as images, video, and audio in the content body
• Encrypted article storage on IPFS
  • To enforce Aemula's hard paywall and securely cross-post paywalled content, all content published through the Aemula Protocol is now encrypted when stored on IPFS, with decryption gated by Aemula's smart contract
    • Content owners can always decrypt their own content, regardless of subscription status
    • Subscribers (both paid and trial) can access decrypted content
    • Public content previews of body text are included in unencrypted IPFS metadata
  • Note that Aemula's encryption protocol is designed to support Shamir secret sharing of decryption keys between decentralized protocol custodians as elected by Aemula Protocol governance, with content owners self-custodying full decryption keys so they don't need to rely on a third party for decryption of their own content. While Aemula is still in beta and testing encryption functionality, Aemula controls and operates a single decryption key custodian.
